Rutgers University, established in 1766, is recognized as the eighth oldest university in the entire United States. Additionally, it is New Jersey's second-oldest university.

Rutgers University replaced Queen's College as the institution's initial name in 1825. It was necessary to change the name in remembrance of Henry Rutgers.

According to reports, he made a contribution to the college that helped to stabilize its financial situation during a period of turmoil.

New Jersey's State University is Rutgers. With four campuses, it's a public land grant research university.

How did the choice to relocate to Canvas Rutgers come about?

Fall 2017 saw the formation of a university-wide group tasked with investigating the various learning management systems (LMS) and assessing whether switching to a single system would be feasible.

The LMS committee—which included members of all current learning management system teams as well as a variety of university academics, staff, and students—made the decision to choose Canvas after careful deliberation.

In addition, the committee assessed the systems employed by comparable universities and carried out a comprehensive analysis of best practices. It was suggested that Rutgers University use Canvas as the only option in light of all the findings.

Why are Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard being discontinued?

There have been significant advancements in educational technology in the past 10 years, particularly in the field of learning management systems (LMS). Teachers are becoming more and more reliant on elements that give their students relevant and interesting learning experiences.

Rutgers teachers and students will benefit from simplified instruction, less complexity, and increased collaboration as a result of the transition from numerous systems to a single LMS for the entire university.

Consolidating into a single LMS would enhance the experience overall, and while the previously stated systems offer some basic functionality, many believe that Canvas' features meet the needs of both teachers and students in the modern classroom.

Which other colleges make use of Canvas?

Over 3,000 colleges, school districts, and other organizations utilize Canvas globally. Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at Berkeley, and twelve of the fourteen Big Ten universities are among the numerous prestigious universities that use Canvas. Furthermore, Stanford was the last of the original founding Sakai schools to transfer to Canvas in 2016.

Right now, I'm using Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard. Does this have an impact on me?

Indeed, throughout the next few years, these three outdated LMSs will be phased away. There will be plenty of time for anyone utilizing these systems for projects, classes, or other reasons to switch over to other options. The project team will collaborate with stakeholders to decide on deadlines, provide resources for support, and find substitutes.

What is the transition's timeline?

While a formal timeframe has not yet been created, departments and schools will collaborate with the project team to identify a suitable plan for the switch to Canvas based on the resources available, the needs of the instructors, and the legacy learning management system now in use. When they become available, all details on the system roadmap and transition dates will be posted here.

When must I relocate to Canvas?

In order to handle courses in the outdated learning management systems, a transition strategy is being created. As soon as official timeframes are available, they will be publicized. Please get in touch with your local instructional support group if you would like to switch your course before your timetable is revealed.

What will happen to the material in my course?

We will do all in our power to support instructors in moving course materials from outdated learning management systems.  While some content can be transferred between platforms with ease, faculty members might need to recreate certain elements in the new setting.

Reducing the impact on teachers and pupils is the aim, and extra help will be given as needed.  Following the migration, course materials will be archived in accordance with the university's data retention policy. There will be a migration timeline soon, but in the interim, you can carry on teaching using your present system.

When I use Canvas, do I still own and maintain control over my intellectual property?

Indeed. Unless their school, department, or program specifies otherwise, instructors maintain ownership and control over the information they create in Canvas.

I've begun creating content on Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard for the forthcoming semester. How should I proceed?

Up until your campus, school, or department has formed a migration plan, you are free to continue developing with and using your legacy learning management system.

Who will be in charge of Rutgers Canvas?

The Office of Information Technology will oversee Canvas as an enterprise software solution for the university.

How much time will I be able to access my Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard sites?

Access to earlier iterations of the courses and non-course websites (for projects, for example) will remain available to faculty and staff. Users of Blackboard will have access for the ensuing three years at the very least. Users of Moodle and Sakai will have enough time to relocate content before access is cut off, even if a system sunsetting plan has not yet been decided.

Does this impact my project/non-course websites?

The initial focus of the transition to a single learning management system will be course sites. Although our ultimate goal is to transfer all content from Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard to Canvas, non-course-related content will be handled as soon as suitable substitutes are found.

Owners of project sites are welcome to keep using their current sites in their respective systems until further notice, but they are also urged to start looking for alternatives.

What impact does this have on the incorporation of external tools like VoiceThread, Turnitin, Kaltura, etc.?

The Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) standard is used to integrate the majority of third-party applications with learning management systems (LMS). Because Canvas is completely LTI compatible, users can use other products, such as Kaltura, no matter which LMS they are using.
