Fall 2017 saw the formation of a university-wide group tasked with investigating the various learning management systems (LMS) and assessing whether switching to a single system would be feasible.

The LMS committee—which included members of all current learning management system teams as well as a variety of university academics, staff, and students—made the decision to choose Canvas after careful deliberation.

In addition, the committee assessed the systems employed by comparable universities and carried out a comprehensive analysis of best practices. It was suggested that Rutgers University use Canvas as the only option in light of all the findings.

Why are Sakai, Moodle, and Blackboard being discontinued?

There have been significant advancements in educational technology in the past 10 years, particularly in the field of learning management systems (LMS). Teachers are becoming more and more reliant on elements that give their students relevant and interesting learning experiences.

Rutgers teachers and students will benefit from simplified instruction, less complexity, and increased collaboration as a result of the transition from numerous systems to a single LMS for the entire university.

Consolidating into a single LMS would enhance the experience overall, and while the previously stated systems offer some basic functionality, many believe that Canvas' features meet the needs of both teachers and students in the modern classroom.

We will do all in our power to support instructors in moving course materials from outdated learning management systems.  While some content can be transferred between platforms with ease, faculty members might need to recreate certain elements in the new setting.

Reducing the impact on teachers and pupils is the aim, and extra help will be given as needed.  Following the migration, course materials will be archived in accordance with the university's data retention policy. There will be a migration timeline soon, but in the interim, you can carry on teaching using your present system.

Access to earlier iterations of the courses and non-course websites (for projects, for example) will remain available to faculty and staff. Users of Blackboard will have access for the ensuing three years at the very least. Does this impact my project/non-course websites?

The Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) standard is used to integrate the majority of third-party applications with learning management systems (LMS). Because Canvas is completely LTI compatible, users can use other products, such as Kaltura, no matter which LMS they are using.
